Encouragement for the Weekend

“Their prayer came up to His holy dwelling place, even unto heaven.” 2 Chronicles 30:27
 
Prayer is the never-failing resort of the Christian in any case, in every plight.

When you cannot use your sword you may take to the weapon of all-prayer. Your powder may be damp, your bow-string may be relaxed, but the weapon of all-prayer need never be out of order. Sword and spear need furbishing, but prayer never rusts, and when we think it most blunt it cuts the best.

Prayer gains audience with heaven in the dead of night, in the midst of business, in the heat of noonday, in the shades of evening. In every condition, whether of poverty, or sickness, or obscurity, or slander, or doubt, your covenant God will welcome your prayer and answer it from His holy place.

Prayer is an open door which none can shut. Devils may surround you on all sides, but the way upward is always open, and as long as that road is unobstructed, you will not fall into the enemy’s hand.

No Excuses

NO EXCUSES

“Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice.” 1 Samuel 15:22
 
Saul had been commanded by the Lord God, to slay utterly all the Amalekites and their cattle. Instead of doing so, he preserved the king, and suffered his people to take the best of the oxen and of the sheep. When called upon by Samuel to account for this, he declared that he did it with a view of offering sacrifice to God; but Samuel met him at once with the assurance that sacrifices were no excuse for an act of direct rebellion.
 
·Always remember to keep strictly in the path of your Saviour’s command.
·To hearken to His precept with an attentive ear is better than to bring the fat of rams, or any other precious thing to lay upon His altar.
·All the pretensions you make of attachment to your Master, and all the devout actions which you may perform, are no recompense for disobedience.
·”To obey,” even in the slightest and smallest thing, “is better than sacrifice.”
 
How many adorn their temples and decorate their priests, but refuse to obey the word of the Lord! God have mercy on us.

TWO WAY STREET

St. Luke 15: 16

“The boy became so hungry that even the pods he was feeding the pigs looked good to him. But no one gave him anything.”

  • Desperation can lead us in two ways: Either the right or the wrong.
  • In the case of the prodigal son, it brought him back to his senses.
  • We are all valuable to our heavenly Father.
  • The arms of our heavenly Father are always inviting to those who choose to do the right.

LESSON: The boy’s father saw him return home. Filled with love and compassion, ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.

SEEING is BELIEVING

John 4: 48

“Except you see signs and miracles, you will not believe.”

  • Craving after miracles was a symptom of the sickly sate of men’s minds in our Lord’s day.
  • The sad reality is that nothing has changed in this modern time.
  • Many refuse the gospel which is so desperately needed.
  • Our heavenly Father is generous, but He spurns all dictation and maintains His sovereignty of action.

LESSON: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that WHOSOEVER believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.” John 3: 16
