ENCOURAGING LEADERSHIP

ENCOURAGING LEADERSHIP

“What you see and hear depends a good deal on where you are standing. It also depends on what sort of a person you are.” C.S. Lewis

Leadership’s Greatest Challenge:

  • NOT Finances
  • NOT Personnel
  • NOT Facilities
  • NOT People
  • NOT Recognition

Leadership’s greatest challenge is “GROWTH LEADERSHIP.” Is growing as a leader.

MINISTRY:

What is the ministry of the church, the leader, and the congregation?

Paul exhorts:

The church is a ministry of reconciliation that invites persons to participate in the new creation in Christ. Such a ministry requires that the church model the Christ way of life.

Ministry is not about building one’s own power, authority and profit.

Ministry is: 2 Corinthians …

  • Giving self, in suffering love for others (6: 4-10).
  • Emptying self to make life available as a vessel for God’s power (4: 7).
  • Carrying forward the ministry of Christ, bearing the marks of Christ (4: 10).
  • About trusting God and not our own ability (3: 4-6).

WINNERS vs. LOSERS

The winner is always part of the answer. The loser is always part of the problem.

The winner always has a program. The loser always has an excuse.

The winner says, let me do it for you. The loser says, that’s not my job.

The winner sees an answer in every problem. A loser sees a problem in every answer.

The winner says, it may be difficult, but it’s possible. A loser says, it may be possible, but it’s too difficult.

A winner listens… A loser just waits until it is his turn to talk.

When a winner makes a mistake, he says, I was wrong. When a loser makes a mistake, he says, it wasn’t my fault.

A winner says, “I’m good, but not as good as I could be.” A loser says, “I’m not as bad as a lot of people.”

A winner feels responsible for more than his job. A loser says, “I only work here.”

Colossians 3:23-24 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” NIV

There are four essential components to being a winning team.

THE HEAD OF A WINNING TEAM.

Games are won or lost between the ears before any player reaches the field. A team’s performance can rise no higher than the level of its thinking. The mindset of a team sets the ceiling of the team’s achievements. Thoughts are either limiting or liberating, empowering or paralyzing. A team must think like winners to be winners.

THE HEART OF A WINNING TEAM.

Every great achievement is fueled by passion. Passion changes losers into winners. Passion makes possible the impossible. Passion is the energy of the soul, the fire in one’s belly.

THE HABITS OF A WINNING TEAM.

A large portion of your life is automatically run by your habits. It has been estimated by experts that 80% of everything we do from the time we get up until we go to bed is out of habit. A habit helps us to repeat behavior automatically without having to think or to learn all over again. A habit is a thought or action that we have repeated until it has become automatic, and we do it without stopping to decide.

THE HANDS OF A WINNING TEAM.

All of the following must culminate in action:

Theory

Planning

Practice

Prepare

Execute

CONCLUSION:

King David instructed his son Solomon, “Consider now, for the Lord has chosen you to build a temple as a sanctuary. Be strong and do it.” (1 Chron. 28: 10)

The plans for the temple had been drawn, the material gathered, and the workers assembled. Now it was time for Solomon to “Be strong and do it.”

Take the plow in your hand and go for it. “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9: 62)

WSAN – What South Africa Needs

“To identify persons (leaders) who are recognized as having high morals and good business ethic. Leaders who encourage to publish their values, visions and victories, promoting Godly principles as their essence of true success. Through their testimonies, these persons must carry out their responsibilities as role models who will inspire others, especially our youth, to strive for the best and to develop good values for life.”

Proverbs 2: 6-8

“For the Lord gives wisdom, and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds victory in store for the upright, He is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for He guards the course of the just and protects the way of His faithful ones.”

HOW TO BREAK A DROUGHT

TEXT: 1 Kings 18: 17-46

Introduction: Elijah announced a drought in 1 Kings 17:1, “There shall not be neither dew nor rain these few years, except at my word.”

Israel’s sin is the cause for the drought.

  1. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY (18:17), “Then it happened, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, Is that you, O troubler of Israel?” Ahab refused to take responsibility for his role in causing Israel’s drought, spiritually and literally. The nation was hurting.
  2. RESTORE OBEDIENCE (18:18), “I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father’s house have, in that you have forsaken the commandments of the Lord and have followed Baal.” Obedience brings the blessing of God, while disobedience dries it up. According to Deut. 28 the blessings are conditioned. “And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God” 28:2. The Lord will open to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season – If you heed the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, and are careful to observe them” Deut. 28:12-13.
  3. BE DECISIVE (18:21), “How long will you falter between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him, but if Baal, follow him, but the people answered not a word.” You can’t serve two masters. “A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways” James 1:8. “One’s philosophy is not best expressed in words. It is expressed in the choices one makes.”
  4. RETURN TO THE ALTAR (18:30), “And he repaired the altar of the Lord that was broken down.”

“How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at first began to be spoken by the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him” Heb. 2:3. Neglect means, to be careless; make light of; not regard.

  1. MAKE THE SACRIFICE (18:33), “And he put the wood in order, cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the altar.”

God’s people need to “cut the bull” and place it on the altar of sacrifice. (Pun intended)

  1. REMOVE THE IDOLS (18:37), “Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.” An idol is anything that cools our passion for Christ. Idols are destroyed when the Lord is returned to His rightful place in our hearts.
  2. ENJOY THE RAIN (18:41) “Go up, eat and drink: for there is the sound of abundance of rain.” Ahab went off to eat and drink.

CONCLUSION: Elijah went and sat on top of Mount Camal, put his head between his kness, sent his messenger to go and look toward the sea. He came back with the message that “there is nothing”. Go and look again, which the servant did seven times. On the seventh time, he brought back a message saying, “A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea” (18:44).

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Matthew 6: 33
